CALL FOR PAPERS AND SPECIAL SESSION ORGANIZATION:

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce that the UMTIK 2024 conference is scheduled to take place from August 14 to August 17, 2024. This event will be hosted by the Presidency of Atılım University in Ankara, selected for its historical significance in the field. Ankara holds a special place as the hometown of the late Professor Metin Akkök, one of the original initiators and organizers of the inaugural UMTIK Conference in 1984, held at the METU Campus in Ankara. Professor Akkök continued to contribute diligently to subsequent UMTIK conferences until his passing on May 11, 2023. In honor of his invaluable contributions to the success and reputation of UMTIK conferences, the UMTIK Organizing Committee has decided to dedicate UMTIK 2024 to the memory of Professor Metin Akkök.

The first day of the conference, August 14, 2024, is dedicated to commemorating Professor Akkök with talks, scientific papers, panels, seminars, etc., organized by his colleagues and former students at the Mechanical Engineering Department of METU.

Digital Twin for Machine Tool Monitoring

The aim of our current research is to develop robust monitoring and process control systems that can easily be integaretd to any CNC Machine tool. The mathematical models of machining process forces, torque, power, chip load, vibrations, drive loads, servo contouring and volumetric errors along curved tool paths are developed and simulated prior to physical machining operations. CNC inherent sensory data such as servo tracking errors, spindle – fee drive drive torque and power, actual axis positions and velocities, as well as the data from machine mounted analog sensors are collected during machining the parts. The information ppredicted from the digital twin and real machining are integrated to detect chatter and tool breakage, track tool wear and contouring errors left on the part, track the wear and faults on the spindle and feed drives of the machine. Simulatenously, the sensor data is used to improve the uncertainities of material, tool and machine parameters using physics and Artificial Intelligence methods. The technology is geared towards making the machine tools intelligent and self correcting systems. Currently, the technology under development is licensed to industry and academia by the Univversity of British Columbia. The research, which is conducted in partnership with Fraunhofer Institute of Germany, is sponsored by Sandvik Coromant, Pratt & Whitney Canada, Siemens CNC, Alp Aerospace from Turkey, Liechti Switzerland and DN Solutions from Korea.

Vector 3D Printing: From Curved Slicer to Continuous Fibre Reinforcement

Although additive manufacturing is called 3D printing, the fabrication in most cases is still in a 2.5D way - materials are accumulated layer upon layer in planes along a fixed printing direction, restricting the flexibility of 3DP. The commonly identified problems of the current 2.5D printing practice are i) weak mechanical strength between the layers of materials, ii) additional supporting structures that are hard to remove and lead to the waste of material and fabrication time, iii) staircase appearance on the surface of printed models. Moreover, this planar fabrication also forbids printing anisotropically strong materials such as carbon fibres along designed paths like "tendons in muscles" to reinforce the mechanical strength or printing on top of curved surfaces for advanced electrical / biological functions. All restrict the fast growth of 3DP technology. These limitations can be overcome by the strategy of Vector 3D Printing (Vec3DP) that extrudes materials along dynamically varied directions. Adding more Degrees-of-Freedom (DoFs) onto the 3D printer and controlling its multi-axis motion is less difficult to implement on hardware. Robotic arms for welding or advanced multi-axis milling machines have already realised this sort of motion. However, the state-of-the-art lacks a computational kernel to effectively generate optimised toolpaths / motions of Vec3DP for models with complex geometry and material distribution although there are some pilot works that can produce relatively simple models. In this talk, I will introduce our recent research effort of investigating a field-based computation paradigm to push the boundary of Vec3DP.
