ABOUT UMTIK CONFERENCES

The first UMTIK conference was organized by MATIMAREN as a national event in Turkish language in 1984 at the Mechanical Engineering Department of the Middle East Technical University (METU), Ankara with a nation-wide participation of Turkish companies and universities. MATIMAREN, Machine Design and Production Research Center (formerly Institute) was initiated in 1979 by a group of faculty in the Mechanical Engineering Department of METU, Ankara, Turkey. The Center aimed to constitute the university-industry cooperation by conducting applied research for industry. The center conducted numerous projects for industry and soon after needed to share this experience and knowledge with other universities and companies by organizing a national conference. This was the idea behind biannual UMTIK conferences which became constitutional and continued without interruption until now.

From the sixth conference (1994) onwards, UMTIK conferences became international and bilingual and continued to be held in METU Campus for the next three events. UMTIK 2002 (10th conference) was organized in Cappadocia; hence, it became the first UMTIK conference which was organized outside the METU Campus. UMTIK conferences started to travel around Turkey thereafter: UMTIK 2004 in Antalya, UMTIK 2006 in Kuşadası, UMTIK 2008 in Istanbul, UMTIK 2010 at the Northern Cyprus Campus of METU, Güzelyurt in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, UMTIK 2012 in Denizli-Pamukkale and UMTIK 2014 will be be organized in İzmir; the Pearl of Aegian Sea.

International Program Committee (IPC) was established for UMTIK 2004 for the first time to take the responsibility of organizing and chairing sessions, preparing and refereeing papers. UMTIK 2004 introduced also a new feature to the conference format by inviting and hosting keynote speakers. UMTIK 2006 was the first event which introduced special sessions: 5 special sessions were organized by the IPC and the Organization Committee (OC) members. IPC became a well established part of UMTIK conferences for UMTIK 2006 organized in Kuşadası. UMTIK 2008 introduced three new features: seminars, sponsors sessions and a forum on a selected issue. UMTIK 2010 bear all those features and introduced a one-day industrial tutorials program and a workshop organized in parallel and mainly addressed to industrialists on the first day of the Conference. The Organizing Committee is traditionally established from the members of MATIMAREN and the faculty of the Mechanical Engineering Department of METU with a few exceptions. UMTIK 2012 was organized in Pamukkale, Denizli. The first day of the Conference was organized under the title "Machining Day" as a separate organization, but yet integrated to the main Conference Program. "Machining Day" was dedicated to the honor of Prof. Dr. Yusuf Altıntaş because of his invaluable contributions to the world literature in metal cutting and machine tools. Cutting-edge research results were presented by the leading researchers in the area. "Machining Day" organization is planned to continue as an established feature of the Conference in 2014 and will be organized by the two leading professors, Dr. Erhan Budak and Dr. İsmail Lazoğlu, as was the case in UMTIK 2012.
