Industry 4.0 for machine tool in Taiwan

Scope

The term "Industrie 4.0" originates from a project in the high-tech strategy of the German government, which promotes the computerization of manufacturing. Taiwan government has also initiated a project for computerization of various industries, including machine tool industry. This session will focus on current status of the application of information technology as well as research achievements related to Industry 4.0 and cyber-physical systems in Taiwan machine tool industry.

This session will focus on the following topics:

1. Design and implementation of cyber-physical systems for machine tools
2. Improvement of production efficiency by using sensor data analysis
3. Machine tool design methodology
4. Machine tool metrology
5. Machining process simulation and optimization

Papers and presentations are expected from academy, institutes or industry in Taiwan.

This special session aims to introduce current status in the development of Industry 4.0 technology in Taiwan machine tool industry to the participants of the conference.

He has been working for ITRI since 2006 when he first started working as an engineer at Mechanical and Systems Research Laboratories at ITRI.

Dr. Shuo Peng Liang


He received PhD Degree in Mechanical Engineering from National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan R.O.C.

He has been working for ITRI since 2005 when he first started as a researcher.

Awards received:

Model of Industry Innovation Award in 2011
Traditional Industry Contribution Award, Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), Taiwan, in 2012.

His research interests: computer-aided manufacturing, motion planning, and CAD/CAM.

Prof.Dr. Yung-Chou Kao


He received his Ph.D. Degree in 1998 in Mechanical Engineering from the University of South Australia (UniSA), He worked for the National Kaohsiung University of Applied Sciences (KUAS) as a professor from 2000 to 2014, lectured manufacturing engineering related subjects and established the Remote Virtual Rapid Manufacturing (RVRM) Laboratory in 2002. He has also set up the MAchinery Value ENgineering laboratory (MAVEN) in CCU.

Dr. Kao had been invited to be the adviser of research organizations in Taiwan, including Metals Industry Research and Development Centre (MIRDC), and Precision Machinery Research and Development Center (PMC).

He has published over one hundred and seventy papers including international journal and conference papers, held three patents and published three books. His teaching and research interests include Virtual Reality based machine tool simulator, remote digital manufacturing system, computer aided manufacturing, metal forming process simulation and die design optimization, multi-axes machining and emulations.

He has been actively participated in several professional societies such as Taiwan Forging Association and Taiwan Light Metal Association. He has been reviewers of International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, Computers in Industry, and Computer Aided Design. Professor Kao has successfully developed a software system for three-axis virtual milling machine center operation simulation and this system has been adopted by several major Senior Vocational High Schools and Universities in Taiwan, etc.

Asst. Prof. Dr. Ming-Chyuan Lu


He received his Ph.D. Degree in 2001 in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor, USA

He has been working as a faculty at the Mechanical Engineering Dept. of National Chung Hsing University, Taichung,Taiwan, since 2006. He worked as a researcher in 2005-2006 at the Mechanical and System Lab./ ITRI, Taichung, Taiwan.

He worked as a manager between 2001 and 2005 at the Nano Architect Research Corporation, Hsinchu, Taiwan.

He worked as a research assistant during his Ph.D. study at the University of Michigan and he was an associate engineer at the Optical Electronic System Lab./ITRI, Hsinchu, Taiwan between 1993 and 1996.

His research Interests: Tool Condition Monitoring, Micro Machining, Manufacturing Process Monitoring


Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ming-Chyuan Lu has more than 10 scientific publications listed in the Web of Science.

Assoc. Prof. Dr.Shean-Juinn Chiou


He received his Ph.D. Degree in 1994 in Mechanical Engineering, from the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor, USA

He has been working as a faculty at the Mechanical Engineering Dept. of National Chung Hsing University, Taichung,Taiwan, since 1995.

His research interests: Mechanism Design and Analysis, CAE, Design methodology, Engineering Education, Mechanism Design and Analysis, CAE, Design methodology, Engineering Education

Additive Manufacturing (AM) is rising as an innovative process technology which could transform how products are designed and manufactured. Although AM technologies have been around about 3 decades, its applications have been limited to mostly prototyping. With recent advancements in functional materials and metal printing technologies such as Selective Laser Sintering (SLS), Electron Beam Machining (EBM) etc., AM is making its way into production of functional parts in major industries such as aerospace, medical, automotive etc. In this special session, recent additive manufacturing technologies will be discussed, and trends will be analyzed. Original articles, focusing on design aspects, new AM process technologies and materials, as well as application case studies are welcomed. Although not limited to, focus areas are as follows:

Received his M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Middle East Technical University in 1996 and 2000. Also, received S.M. Degree in System Design and Management from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2008. Has 10 years of industry experience, last position at Oracle America Inc., as Strategy Manager of Manufacturing and Asset Management products. Author of many scientific papers, book chapters and a patent on Manufacturing Systems and Intelligence, Sustainable Manufacturing, and Virtual Enterprise.

Current Research Areas: Additive Manufacturing, Eco-efficient Manufacturing, Product Design and Systems Engineering, Flexible automation and robotics, Virtual Factory, Industry 4.0

Prof.Dr. Nuri Durlu


Received his BSc and MSc degrees from the Department of Metallurgical Engineering of Middle East Technical University and his PhD degree from the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering of New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. He worked as research scientist at Tübitak Marmara Research Center, and as post-doctoral research fellow at University of Vienna, Princeton University and Technical University of Hamburg. Author of many scientific papers and a patent on High Temperature Titanium Aluminides.

Current Research Areas : Additive Manufacturing, Low Density Alloys for Aerospace and Automotive Applications, Powder Metallurgy, Cutting Tools

Prof. Dr. Osman Eroğul


Received his BSc degree from the Electrical-Electronics Engineering Department of Military Academy, MSc degree from the Department of Electrical-Electronics Engineering of Middle East Technical University and PhD degree from the Department of Electronics Engineering of Ankara University. He was the head of Biomedical Engineering Centre, and Medical Design and Manufacturing Centre in Gülhane Military Medical Academy (GATA). He also worked as a research scientist in Communications Research Centre (Ottawa / Canada). He is currently the head of Biomedical Engineering Department and director of Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences in TOBB University of Economics and Technology. Author of many scientific papers and patents on medical devices.

Current Research Areas : Design and production of custom made implants, Additive Manufacturing, physiological signal and speech processing , medical image processing, sleep signals processing, medical technology management, quality assurance system.


Cryogenic Machining

Received his Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering from University of Kentucky, USA in 2013.

Research interest includes cryogenic machining, and surface integrity characteristics of difficult-to-machine materials.

Currently principal investigator of three projects (TUBITAK, TUBİTAK-ARRS, and MU-funded), mainly focusing on cryogenic machining of advanced aerospace alloys and modeling machining-induced surface integrity characteristics.

Associate Editor of Machining Science and Technology: An International Journal, and published 16 refereed journal papers and over 20 international conference papers.

Scope
The process of cryogenic machining, due to increased demand for environmentally friendly manufacturing process, has seen a growing interest in the machining community. But the role of cryogenic cooling to improve machining performance of advanced materials is still research issue. The effect of cryogenic cooling on surface integrity characteristics of various engineering materials used in biomedical, aerospace, and automotive industries needs to be still investigated. Researchers from academia and industries are invited to contribute to better understanding the role of cryogenic cooling on machining performance and surface integrity aspects of various materials.

The research topics to be discussed in this special session will include (but are not limited to):

• Cryogenic machining of various engineering materials
• Cryogenic machining-induced surface integrity aspects
• Cryogenic machining vs. dry, flood, and MQL machining
• Cryogenic cooling application in various machining operations
• Lubrication effect of LN2 and CO2 during machining process
• Cryogenic treatment of cutting tools
